Hammer Toe Operation Procedure

Hammer ToeOverview

Hammer toe most commonly affects the second toe on the foot. It causes the middle joint to bend. Hammertoe is most frequently caused by structural problems in the toe or from wearing poor fitting shoes. It is important to diagnose and treat hammertoe early because the condition tends to become worse over time. If left untreated, hammertoe can require surgery.

Causes

The main cause of hammer toe is poorly fitted and/or poorly designed footwear. Any footwear that is too tight in the toe box, especially high-heeled shoes, can push the toes forward, crowding one or more of them into a space that is not large enough to allow the toes to lie flat and spread as they hammertoe should. Other causes include the following. Changes in foot anatomy. Sometimes the metatarsal bones in the ball of the foot can ?drop,? creating a situation in which the toes do not make contact with the surface of the shoe. The toes may then contract at one or both of the joints to re-establish contact with the surface. Traumatic injuries in which toes are jammed or broken. Diabetic neuropathy. This can cause abnormal foot biomechanics due to nerve and/or muscle damage. Damage to nerves and muscles from other conditions, such as arthritis or stroke. Heredity.

HammertoeSymptoms

People who have painful hammertoes visit their podiatrist because their affected toe is either rubbing on the end their shoe (signaling a contracted flexor tendon), rubbing on the top of their shoe (signaling a contracted extensor tendon), or rubbing on another toe and causing a painful buildup of thick skin, known as a corn.

Diagnosis

Hammer toes may be easily detected through observation. The malformation of the person’s toes begin as mild distortions, yet may worsen over time – especially if the factors causing the hammer toes are not eased or removed. If the condition is paid attention to early enough, the person’s toes may not be permanently damaged and may be treated without having to receive surgical intervention. If the person’s toes remain untreated for too long, however the muscles within the toes might stiffen even more and will require invasive procedures to correct the deformity.

Non Surgical Treatment

For hammertoes that are still flexible, a podiatrist might recommend padding or taping the toes to relieve pain and orthotic inserts for shoes to minimize pressure and keep the toe properly aligned. Anti-inflammatory drugs or corticosteroid injections can relieve pain and inflammation. For more advanced cases of hammertoe, a podiatrist might recommend a surgical procedure to cut the tendon, allowing the toe to straighten. For hammertoes that have become rigid, a more complicated surgery might be needed, during which the podiatrist removes part of the bone at the deformed joint to allow it to straighten.

Surgical Treatment

If conservative treatments don’t help, your doctor may recommend surgery to release the tendon that’s preventing your toe from lying flat. In some cases, your doctor might also remove some pieces of bone to straighten your toe.

How To Fix Hammer Toes

Parekh says it’s a good idea to seek medical attention if you have toe pain with or without shoes. Or, if shoes you used to find comfortable are no longer comfortable, see a foot expert or an orthopaedic surgeon who can discuss your options with you. I’ve had patients who have 200 or 300 pairs of shoes and are very emphatic and serious when they say there is no way they’re getting rid of their shoes,” he says. “And that’s okay. We can work with them, with everyone understanding that we will eventually have to do surgery.”

Sit and place the foot on the floor and tie a rubber band around the toes. Then stand and at the same time, pull the rubber band towards you, and hold the toes up for 10 seconds and then release. Repeat 10 times. The same can be done by just pulling your affected toe by one hand and holding it there for 10 seconds. Similar to the method above, sit on the floor with the feet outstretched, place a towel around the toes and then pull it towards you. Hold your toes in this outstretched position for 15 seconds, and repeat the exercise 10 times.hammer toe treatment

Treatment of Hammer Toe will depend on the severity of the condition. If attention is sought early enough before the condition becomes permanent, the toes can be straightened and measures can be taken to prevent a reoccurance. If Hammer Toe is caused by a person being flat-footed, a podiatrist can create a custom-molded shoe that will give adequate support and aid the toe muscles. I immediately noticed the large salicylic acid pad wrapped around his big toe. It was entirely too large for the area being treated and had slipped loose. At this point, it was probably causing rather than relieving his pain.

Choosing proper shoes is extremely important to keep foot problems at bay. Wearing wrong size footwear all day long can cause heel pain that can last for weeks. Also, ill-fitting shoes increase the chances of developing calluses and ulcers on the feet. People who wear shoes that are not roomy and have a small toe box are at increased risk of hammer toes. So, buying comfortable shoes that come with a large toe box and extra depth is necessary to keep feet healthy. Have you ever whacked your thumb really hard with a hammer? Or perhaps stubbed your toe on a heavy chunk of furniture? Annoying isn’t it?

1.Buy shoes that fit! Sounds like a no-brainer, but most women wear shoes at least a half a size too small. Measure your feet every time you buy shoes, even just a few extra pounds can make your shoe size larger. Remember that the number is just a suggestion, different brands can size completely differently. 16.Never perform bathroom surgery on your corns and calluses. Also, never use those over-the-counter corn removers; the acid plaster in these products does not know when to stop and can cause nasty sores and infections!
